About Willis Fairbank Pierce Memorial Hospital & School of Nursing, Wai
Founded in 1887, W.F.P.M. Hospital & School of Nursing is a prestigious institution located in Wai, Satara, Maharashtra.
He had some knowledge of medicine and died helping tThe missionary works at Maharashtra started by missionary named Gorden Hall, 1887.he cholerical patients during a cholera epidemic. American mission wanted to start some medical work at Wai in 1901. So Dr. George Harding wanted to make hospital, but before he could start he died in 1903. In 1908 Dr. And Dr. (Mrs.) Beals both M.Ds. came from Solapur to Wai and started the medical work Dr. (Mrs.). Beals who was Dr. Rose Fairbank before marriage was a famous doctor in Jhansi. She treated women and children. In 1913 the hospital building was completed, and was inaugurated on 23rd Jan. 1913. The American mission had named it as N.M. Wadia Hospital as a big chunk of money had come from this charitable trust. But still there was no space for the O.P.D. complex, and the O.P.D. continued to be held at Kassar madhi (bulding of shri kassar), in wai village.
After Dr. Beals, Dr. Walter Hume came and carried forward the dreams of Dr. Beals by making the new building. Dr. Willis F. Pierce whom Dr. Hume has meat accidently while on furlough donated $23,250 towards this building. So the name was changed to Willis F. Pierce Memorial hospital in 1935.
In 1948 with the help of Mission board of women the nursing school started Miss. Catherine Mix was the first tutor. This was three years nursing course. Without the midwifery. In 1979 midwifery course was started. In 1987 new G.N.M course of three years was started but unfortunately in 1996 the school stopped taking students for various reasons.
In 2005 the new revised G.N.M course of 3½ years was started after obtaining a fresh permission from Indian Nursing Council, Maharashtra Nursing Council and Maharashtra government.
